The first command in my FTP script was NOOP which i think issued the messages regarding the OS and the name format. Since the issuing of NOOP put these messages in th output it looks like I had signed on when in fact I had not yet signed on. I had introduced it a while back ( i forget why), because we had an issue without it for a customer.
