Firstly, I don't see a lot of reference about environment variables. Is
there any reason why they are not often used?

There are a lot of alternatives for this sort of thing, and envvar's are relatively new to the iSeries as opposed to the alternatives (data areas, user spaces, etc.) Consequently, not many iSeries programmers have bothered to use them.

Unix programmers migrating to the iSeries use them quite a bit, though.

Secondly, I'm curious where the variables live. We utilize multiple
IASP's - and I'm trying to find out if each IASP gets it's own
environment space or if such variables are held in SysSpace.

Envvar's can be stored at either the system level or the job level. When you first access envvar's at the job level, the system ones are imported.

Since they're not disk objects, I doubt that an IASP would have any effect on them. But, I have only a vague idea of what an IASP is, so I could be completely wrong.
