Oh I agree that not many will have the full blown Acrobat.  However a free 
reader is available to everyone.  There are so many websites where pdf is 
the defacto standard that we put on a reader on any pc authorized to 
search the web.

As can a PDF. The reality is that nothing is totally secure doing it this
way. The thinking is that more people are going to have WORD on their
systems, than are going to have Acrobat.

I must respectfully disagree with this statement.  PDF documents can be
modified with appropriate software.  In addition, these documents take
considerably longer than Word documents to open.

A password can be required to modify a Word document to prevent
unauthorized
changes.

A Word doc can be modified, so you don't want to send an invoice that can
be
modified.
