1) Using the record count is only OK if you're sure that the file is "frozen" while you are processing it.

Of course. In this particular case the file is being built in QTEMP and then processed. Both steps are performed by the same CL program thus the file is not likely to change during processing.


2) Will the OVRDBF reposition the cursor after the file has been opened?

Not sure, I think so but it's been ages since I had to do this in CL--easy enough to verify (probably have to close and reopen the file to make the override stick). However POSDBF will definitely work.
