Beyond checking the system value QABNORMSW before starting, I am not aware of 
anything Rob.  

I have had to IPL a system to get a normal IPL logged in this system value 
before loading and applying PTF's.  It's  a pain in the rear but lesser 
hassle than than what you have been through today....
