So an RPG program using a file for update in its F-specs would create such an

the program in question here leaves with RETRN - shouldn't the file stay open?

I know we should rewrite this program. But the job is very complicated and has 
lots of 
intermixed programs and calls. Gee, our project plans already has us maxed out 
until
October or so.

Audit journalling has been turned on for DataMirror. And these lots of audit 
entries seem to 
create some problems in the mirroring.
