IIRC when tapes were acting strangely and many years ago, a CE (it may have been the tape vendor and not IBM / can't recall) told us not to INZTAP, but instead wait for the error message and answer with the INZ response. Is that still an option? There was some kind of problem with the density if I recall, and the INZ reponse 'knew what was best' . . . kinda scary all by itself - but it worked.
