I think the tech needs to get out in the world. This all works fine on my system
I've done it at 4.4 4.5 and 5.1. Sorry haven't got to 5.2 yet.

I just checked my cfg. For my NT to OS/400 connection I'm using the
FAKE TokenRing connection with 192.168.2.1 on the 400 side and 192.168.2.2 on
the NT side. This gives you the fastest connection between the to systems.

Can you give us the IPs all the machines in question?
Can you give us the Routing Table onthe 5.2 box?
Run IPCONFIG /ALL on the NEW NT and give us that output?
