I think the propriety of the hardware is an incentive, not a disincentive. PC's are starting to shape up, but how many times have we spent a lot on maintenance and support to save $0.50 on an alternative hardware board? The competition to inspire IBM to lower their prices is the fact that people may just jump to an alternative platform.
