As far as technical specifications go, on things like rotation speed, data-rate, latency, etc., the 8 GB and 17 GB drives are identical. The 8 GB drives however, have twice the amount of read-ahead cache (4 MB vs. 2 MB according to the V5R1 System Manual). This might account for the difference in your performance. It's the only published difference I can locate between the drives, aside from the obvious data density.
