According to the system handbook, both the 8.5 GB and 17 GB drives have
a 'burst data rate' of 80 MB/sec.  My assumption is that is the maximum
amount of data moving from the disk device (including built-in cache) to
the disk controller.

Admittedly, a disk-arm over a 10K RPM drive will be exposed to twice as
many bits per unit of time on a drive with twice the bit density.  I
believe that the 80 MB/sec limit is the current Ultra2 SCSI upper limit
and will be in place until the controller technology changes again.

In answer to your question, the data rates of disk drives would increase
with disk density until some other limit within the system is reached.
In this case, both drives probably exceed the throughput limitations of
the disk controllers.
