Phil & Rizwan,

The extenders are available at V5R1 for a fee. I don't think they are really
expensive,
but they are also not that powerful. They can dump an XML document into a
similarly
structured database file, but optimal database structure does not match optimal
XML
document structure.

The procedural parser (RPG) is somewhat limited because it is based on the C++
version
of Xerces, which is behind the Java version. Most applications built for the
iSeries are
expected to be industrial strength. The older versions of Xerces (including
IBM's XML4J 2.0.15)
are somewhat behind. They do not support schemas at this point, which is where
I think most
iSeries shops want to be. To get that support you need to get to a very recent
version of
Xerces, I am using 1.4.2 without any problems in both VA/Java 3.5.3 and on my
iSeries system.

A lot depends on what release you are on, your familiarity with Java, and what
you want
XML to do for you. I have set up Xerces quite a few times on the iSeries and in
VA/Java and
should be able to help you; just post another message with the specifics.

Rizwan,

I'm using VAJ 3.5 but the parser I used in the example is the IBM XML Parser
for Java 2.0.15.

The database I'm accessing is DB2/400 and I don't think the extenders are
available for it. Maybe some day in a PTF? :)

Thanks for the link to developeriq. I'm going to go through the tutorials.

Phil
