-----Original Message-----First I think IBM really screwed up by removing the old Chapter 3 (preparing to install) from the Software installation book. Now they have you jumping around like a crazy to save 48 pages of paper. Why? You need to get the book Managing Software & Licensed Programs from the Information Center CD or off the web to go into some of the prep required for the upgrade.

In the Software Installation book, on page on page 144 there is the program to run to estimate spool file conversion. Along, with the 3 other estimates that need to be done to figure out how long.
Another Great reason to delete spool files, or at least archive them.

extended downtime on the 300,000 spool files on the system. They may have
just done the hot site box, figured "Hey, they're the same..." and so asked
for six hours again.
Have you got links to those conversion estimate jobs handy?
Our systems guys are pretty darn good, but nobody's infallible or perfect
and a pointer to those jobs might save them from this kind of flack next
time.
You should have heard the user chorus when they got the email about
tonight's 6 hour downtime for the hardware upgrade (2 iStars to 4 sStars)!
It would be funny if I didn't know how the ops guys felt. It's tough to
take that kind of downtime in a 24x7x52 casino environment. It took the
system away from 9 casinos and 8 hotels.
I'm just warning folks, do your homework. And by all means watch the
hiper's. That disk utilization bug is MEAN. Even after the hiper's are
applied we're still climbing... just more slowly. An IPL of our development
box last night got back 20% of 429gb. There's still a hole somewhere.

In each case did you run the conversion estimate jobs for Spool files,
User Profiles, and QADB* files, and how close were they to your total
time to convert. There is a lot to estimate for going to V5R1, you
have the regular replace LIC, OS/400, & LPPs plus the above conversions.

Our hot backup site model 820 2-way took < 4 hours
Our live site model 820 2-way took ~20 hours! (ops estimated 6hrs)
Hiper's!
each box we took to v5r1 immediately started running up the disk used at a
prodigious rate, till they hit 98% and we IPL'ed. Happened after one ofthebeta drops, when we GA'd our 720 development box and when we upgraded each
820.
Quite messy in each of our cases.

We are planning on moving to V5R? in the next Month. While we are planning
some down time are there any Gothcas we need to be on the look out for?
What are the benefits of moving to V5?
I know they made some enhancements to RPG IV, but is there really anything
else?
