I agree with Rob, there are too many lists.
Often a posting doesn't fall cleanly in any of the 
list categories, so it is hard to place it. Many
people subscribe to all (or many) lists anyway.
( I omit here the special RPG and JAVA lists). 
Often a thread "degenerates" from being, say, technical
to be chat. musing, or flame. So it is hard to
keep the list clean anyway. The usefulness of
the MIDRANGE list derives from its broad scope.
