AFAIK There is no pretty solution to this without 3rd party software. And
IMO even those are not as pretty as some might like. 
Have you considered having the reports generating this spoolfile, generate a
file instead? Files are very simple to import (even into preformatted .xls
files) using ODBC and an Excel template file.
