In a CL program, you must provide an OVRTAPF command to redirect the tape
file name to the proper tape device (fields such as tape device, density,
blocking, label should be specified).

In your RPG program on the F spec for the tape file name, specify that the
device type is SEQ. This will allow sequential output to the tape or
sequential read of the tape later.

Subject: Processing Tape Files

Hello all,

Has anyone come up with a way to directly process records from a tape
through an RPG or CL program? We're looking for a way to save/archive
records from a large file on the AS/400 to tape and then, at a later time,
we would like to be able to read through the records on the tape with
specific processing. We're a converted mainframe shop and we know how to
do this from that standpoint, but don't know if this possible on the
AS/400. We really don't want to use SAVLIB and RSTLIB due to the volume of
records we're anticipating putting onto tape.

Thanks,
Theresa Luebeck
