Booth,

Yep, that's about the way it works.  There is a DNS entry put out
by his ISP (or whomever, doesn't' really matter) that points all
ediconsulting.com to Carl's DNS server, then Carl then can have
his DNS server route stuff to wherever he wants it to go.

He can add an entry for www.ediconsulting.com and ediconsulting.com
to go to his web server, wherever that is (doesn't' even have to be
one of his own IPs, he can send it to whoever is hosting his web
page if he wants), he can have van400.ediconsulting.com point to
his AS/400, as well as any other aliases he cares to set up.

An MX record basically has a machine name and an IP address.
Something like (this is not exactly, pulling from memory):

                       MX   van400  216.77.228.208
                       MX   sales   216.77.228.208
                       MX   www     207.46.131.137
                       MX   ftp     204.146.88.99

Regards,

Jim Langston

Patrick, please explain this a bit more?  I'm understanding you to say
that if Carl sets up a DNS server in his LAN, and it is pointed to by the
ISP, than all traffic coming to his domain (ediconsulting.com) will go to Carl's DNS server for routing? In that fashion, carl could
then have   carl@ediconsulting.com   or  carl@van400.ediconsulting.com   or carl@service.ediconsulting.com  or  carl@sales.ediconsulting.com, all fully functioning mail domains on his system?

Carl,

A couple of thoughts:

2. Or, you could just send with the from domain of ediconsulting.com. If
you have a local mail router you use a reply-to address that would route
to the AS/400.
