Our LAN/WAN uses DNS and DHCP from NT servers. None of the PC's in the office have a *host*.* file. The AS/400's are all found from the DNS. The AS/400's have host tables but that is to associate as400a1.appn.sna.ibm.com type names with an address. From anywhere on the network, I can ping as400a1 and get a hit. I can also ping as400a1.serx.com and get a hit but I can't ping as400a1.appn.sna.ibm.com except from an AS/400 that has this name in the host table. -----Original Message----- From: Chris Bipes [mailto:ChrisB@cross-check.com] Sent: Wednesday, June 23, 1999 11:00 AM To: 'MIDRANGE-L@midrange.com' Subject: RE: Ethernet & Token ring w/CA You can create a new entry in your hosts file that points to the Ethernet address. I don't think the system name is used for any more than DNS. +--- | This is the Midrange System Mailing List! | To submit a new message, send your mail to MIDRANGE-L@midrange.com. | To subscribe to this list send email to MIDRANGE-L-SUB@midrange.com. | To unsubscribe from this list send email to MIDRANGE-L-UNSUB@midrange.com. | Questions should be directed to the list owner/operator: david@midrange.com +---
