This is an ICF function called EVOKE.  The idea is that the source system
program has a conversation with the target system program via the
communications file.  The ICFF looks a lot like a WORKSTN file to the
program: The source program can send a record format containing a part
number and the target program can send back a record format containing the
quantity on hand, description, etc.

The ICF manual has some good examples of this.

If your source system doesn't need immediate feedback from the target
system, you can look at a DDM file and the SBMRMTCMD command, or look at the
SNADS command SBMNETJOB.  In a pinch, you could use FTP's QUOTE RCMD
function as well.
