Abstract........: How can I end or release a lock on a device?
Q: When we do our nightly backup each night we vary off all terminals
attached to the AS/400 then vary them on again after the backup.
All terminals came up except for one which is at a remote site with
2 other terminals, connected via a 5494 remote controller and
5299's. The message we get on the terminal is "Unable to obtain
lock on device" and the cause is a process or job has a lock on the
device for QINTER. We did a WRKACTJOB and did not see any job
running for QINTER that we could end. We tried powering down/up the
terminal without success of clearing the lock. We looked in the
joblogs and did not see anything that stood out. Do you have any
   suggestions?

A: Generally when you receive the "Unable to obtain lock on device"
message, an end and start of the subsystem that has the lock on the
device resolves the problem. If QLUS or QSYSARB has the lock, an
IPL is usually required. There is another alternative available.
There is a FIXTST for each release of the AS/400 operating system
that contains a program called QCMNGETL that can be called to try to
release the lock. You can order this through the SNDPTFORD
   command (R120 - SA10103, R130 - SA14227, R210 - SA16827, R211 -
   SA22376, R220 - SA26482 , sa32770 - r230, sa32826 - r305, sa47597 -
   R360, SA39587 - R310, SA56482 - R320, SA58912 - R370, SA66076 -
   R410, SA70781 - R420, SA76901 - R430.
Instructions are included in the cover letter.

Subject: QLUS locks device - cannot vary off.

Anyone shed any light on this:

Customer on V4R2 has an ASYNC device that shows in FAILED status. The
device cannot be varied off (or on) 'cause job QLUS has it locked. The
customer has an A/B switch on the same comm port that they use to switch
between a synch and async modem. With the switch set to synch, an SDLC
line can use the port but the ASYNC line is useless. Any ideas on how to
release the lock short of an IPL?
