CHKOBJ works fine for checking the existence of a member.  Try: CHKOBJ 
OBJ(qgpl/QRPGLESRC) OBJTYPE(*FILE) mbr(blahblah)  You'll find that you get 
error message CPF9815: Member BLAHBLAH file QRPGLESRC in library QGPL not 
found.  If you try it with member PROOF, you'll find that it passes the 
check.

You can also use the QUSLFLD API.  At the very least, it'll prove a bit of 
an education into using the API's...
