I concur, with the item type logic and pulling FG by class, etc.
  However, the big difference, concern  is going to be in Planning, if
you run mrp.  You'll want to set up the item as a 'P' , purchased in
Itembl for the purch site. and 'M' mfg in itembl for make site. you'll
have to somehow get the reqmnts to jump over from the purch env. to the
mfg env. maybe look into multi site logictics for some support. You would
then open a PO and CO / MO.  you may also want to set up a shipping and
recv Location for those items in transit.
