I've never understood the '/opt' directory ... the three distros I've worked with so far (Fedora/Redhat, Slackware {not in a while}, and Ubunut) don't use it directly.

It's only used by some 3rd party packages that have their own installer.

Personally, I would prefer that kind of stuff get installed in /usr/local instead of /opt.
