The latest version of WDS comes with an IDE called WebSphere Development
Studio Client for iSeries (WDSc).

This IDE is the WebSphere Studio Site Developer Advanced IDE (WSSDa) with
a lot of additional iSeries functionality included.  WSSDa contains a
subset of the features found in WebSphere Studio Application Developer
(WSAD).  Specifically, it does not contain the tooling needed for
developing EJB's.  If you are devloping EJB's, you would need to purchase
WSAD.  When you then install WDSc it will see that WSAD is installed and
it will offer to add the special iSeries support into WSAD instead of
installing WSSDa.

The current version number for all of these IDE's is 4.x in order to match
the version of WebSphere Application Server that they support.

Henry,

There seems to be a lot of confusion when it comes to AS/400 and WebSphere
development. Does the "WebSphere Development Studio for the iSeries"
product
include WebSphere Application Developer or a subset of it? If not, then
where would you use "WebSphere Development Studio for the iSeries"?

When using the development environment for WebSphere 4.0 you use WebSphere
Application
Developer 4.0 (for the AS/400 there is a version called WebSphere Studio
Client)...

It is best used on a PC (1.2 MHz Processor or above and 512 MB RAM
minimum)
running Windows
2000 Professional.

In addition to the tools above I use Macromedia Dreamweaver for more
intricate layout of
web pages and Macromedia HomeSite for enhanced searches and replaces...

I also use Araxis Merge for excellent comparison of PC files and
Directories, and XML Spy
for excellent XML/XSL/DTD tools...

You can put IBM UDB DB2 on the PC and do all your development there, or if
you are using
the IBM supplied Java classes for AS/400 access you can access a set of
test
files.
Ideally, you will create a Collection (using SQL) on the AS/400 and Create
Tables as well.
You can then access the new files using either full fledged SQL as well as
RPG.
