I agree with Al, that no book is going to make you an ace programmer and
that only time and experience will really help. The only think I differ in
opinion about is learning C first. I never took to C as much as I tried,
and I found Java a lot easier to grasp mostly because I hated pointers and
indirect pointers in C. But if you already have some C knowledge it will
definitely help you. Getting a beginning book and downloading the JDK from
Sun and just diving in is the best bet. Then once you start feeling
comfortable go and get the AS/400 Toolbox from Java off of the IBM site.
There are some neat things in it and it will help you get an idea of what
you can do with Java on the Client Side. Plus this is a good forum to
bounce things off of people.

Good Luck..

Al,
that's a good question. From what I'm told, the best way is to learn or
get a decent knowledge base in C first. So, from that angle check your
local community college or checkout the C in 21 Days types of books..Also
Viagraphics has a really nice set of video's on both C and JAVA...checkout
www.viagrafix.com. Caveat: don't expect any video or book to make you a
ace programmer as that only comes with time and lots of Zantac, but they
do a really decent job of getting your feet wet and giving you a working
vocabulary...
