If I remove my check after the START for the file status and allow the program to do a READ, then I get an error 46.... invalid read on a file.

Subject: Re: [COBOL400-L] Logical File Access

There is zero difference between the handling of a logical and a physical.
If I recall correctly the compiler does not even know the difference unless
it "asks" and it has no need to do so.

I would suggest you try the START with a lowval (Hex 00's) key - set it up
in debugger if you want - and try that. You should get the first record.

What happens if you change the code so that it reads anyway even after the
START fails with status 23?
