If the MariaDb database is working fine I would not suggest moving it in to DB2 storage engine unless you want to use the same data from an RPG application.

I can't imagine the performance would really be noticed on a small site unless you just want to do it as a technical exercise.

I haven't run in to any customers using the native DB2 engine and don't know how much if any effort is still going in to it.

I've never heard of a "native" storage engine for MariaDB. Do you mean the "default" storage engine, which is supposedly https://mariadb.com/kb/en/innodb/? Actually, I'm not sure what the default storage engine is for PHP on IBM i. The phpMyAdmin dialog for creating tables has a drop-down list of about eight possible storage engine options.

When you say "leaving it in Maria", what storage engine are you
referring to (i.e. MyISAM, InnoDB, CSV)? My intuition says that using
the IBMDB2i storage engine would perform better than a storage engine
that referenced a bulk IFS file. But I haven't seen any benchmarks to
prove it.
