Yep. We're not there yet. But we have reasons for wanting to plan for capacity.

We already do have multiple back end servers, one of which is an IBM i.

...I am quite convinced that such a company would not have a single database server on the backend, let alone an IBM i. You're talking about companies with hundreds of millions of users and probably hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of concurrent transactions, this would mean hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of QZDASOINIT/QSERVER jobs, before you even start to worry about your web framework resources, which would surely swamp any single IBM i.

Again, I'm not saying CGI is a bad decision. I'm sure it works perfectly fine in many cases.

If a company wants to handle very high volumes of concurrent requests quickly (think Walmart, eBay, PayPal or Amazon Brand Stores), then node may perform better than CGI. We would like to choose the technology that can better handle any amount of growth.

You could create web services using COBOL (or RPG) as well, if that's the main programing language.

Easily send JSON (or XML. blech...) data back to the requestor. All you'd really need is YAJL or something similar.
