I've used virtual optical drives for PTFs and upgrades. You can download a disc image and FTP it to the system. If you have actual media you can load them to virtual drive during the week, I happen to work in the same building as one of our systems. Then do the upgrade remotely, or at least not spending all day sitting there loading cd's on the upgrade day.

In fact, I found this in what's new for v6.1:
Virtual tape devices for release upgrades
In addition to using a tape image catalog and a virtual tape device to install PTF fixes or single licensed programs, you can now also use these to perform an i5/OS software upgrade. Changes for this capability are shown throughout this topic collection.

Sometime after v5r4, I think as early as v6.1, but certainly by v7.1, IBM added the capability to load the operating system using virtual tape. This allows you to reload without having to touch the system. I never did it, but when they added virtual tape and virtual optical to the box around v5r4, I used that to install PTF's and licensed programs on remote boxes. The promise was that remote system load was on the way using the same mechanism. You might want to check into that on the midrange-l list.

Our current development is on
v5r4... our current production is on v7r1. I have a v6r1 box I want to rebuild as a v7r2. And I have learned that we own the boxes out right.
I was told the only way to upgrade was to go to the box and place hands on upon it to get a successful rebuild.
