If you aren't quite ready to tackle the learning curve inherent with the Zend Framework, I suggest the Yii framework as a simpler alternative.

If self-learning then I would go with Zend. This will give you transferrable PHP skills that can be used on any platform and also exposes you to the Zend framework. The learning curve may be a bit steeper but getting experience with any PHP framework is good experience.
