I don't know about email being old-school, but I acknowledge SMS as an alternative. My wife complains that she gets too many SMS messages and can't keep up with them.

Yes, I use HTML templates, for example:

That's a template to retrieve / reset Login parameters. A program replaces markers such as {{uid}} with values from the database, generates IFS stream files, then passes the file name to Net.Data's DTW_SENDMAIL() function.

Short Message Service (SMS) is a great solution in that the recipient
can be a variety of texts, including email, phone, tablet, and FAX.

As to the HTML solution...  does your solution lay in developing templates?
