Yes, he is an active participant. He made 2 well thought out posts that
everyone was able to read.
You gave me the impression that you could not see them by posting this:
"Nice to know that Scott obviously sends out filtered mails that he dosn't
want other to respond to"
which made no sense to me. Filtered? How could he post to the list such
that only some could see it?
Since this is essentially off-topic, I'll stop here since I am evidently
flummoxed by your post.

Todd,
What I've discovered is that RPG is simply a better language

business rules and business logic than the others.
I agree with your assessment that it's often hard to find
IBMRPGdevelopers
developers. That's not to say that it's hard to find RPG
--it's
out-of-datebut rather than most RPG developers on the job market have
skills, so are not "qualified." The reasons for this vary, but
mostly because too many businesses have this idea that RPG and
i
aremodern
not capable (Which is completely untrue) and therefore delegate
tasks to other platforms. This becomes self-fulfilling,
approachthe
RPGers don't get real life work experience with modern work.
To combat that, you have to start somewhere... and one
hirethat
has worked well for several shops that I've talked to is to
theyPHP
or
C programmers, and then TEACH them RPG. Many of them, once
IBMget
past the learning curve, are REALLY impressed by the RPG and
ijob
is aenvironment. The integrated platform with integrated database
databasepositive boon for them. Being able to write business logic and
logic in RPG is something they enjoy, because it makes their
willexperienceeasier
(Especiallythan attempting the same thing in languages like PHP or C.
C!)
And they bring a fresh viewpoint to old shops, and their
programmers...withresults
modern development techniques comes along with them -- and the
are great.
So please don't be dismayed when you can't find RPG
don'tjust
pleasedhire a PHP or C programmer, and teach them. I think you'll be
with that.
However -- and this is a mistake I've seen too many times --
try
to thrust them into old-fashioned ways of doing things, that
themturn
them off. Give them Rational Developer, not SEU/PDM. Have
otherlearn
and write apps in Free format code, with subprocedures and
only.CGIDEV2road,modularlegacy
techniques, and SQL for file access. Don't start them off with
stuff, or it will discourage them. (Though, probably down the
applicationsthey'll have to learn the legacy stuff to maintain older
--platform.)
but don't start them there, or they'll get turned off of the
