Re: jsf - Newbie question

Odd it used to be there. I usually use Maven builds, so I guess I just
didn't notice. Anyway, you can download it from the JBoss maven repository
https://repository.jboss.org/nexus/content/groups/public-jboss//com/sun/facelets/jsf-facelets/1.1.15/.
If you're going to try JSF 1.2 you might want to check out RichFaces too
http://www.jboss.org/richfaces.

I've done a few projects using JSF and I've really liked it. There is also a
great library called PrettFaces (http://ocpsoft.com/prettyfaces/) that
allows to use nice URL's and skip the whole navigation piece in the
faces-config.xml.

There are other JSF component libraries out there like IceFaces and
PrimeFaces, but I've found RichFaces has the best support for JSF 1.2. I've
used PrimeFaces, but it's 1.2 support is lacking IMO. I tried IceFaces, but
just didn't really like it. I should add a disclaimer I do work for Red Hat
in the JBoss division, but not on the RichFaces team.

Yes. If you use Facelets http://facelets.java.net/. Facelets uses XHTML
files and gets around the whole mess with having to use the <f:verbatim
/>
tag. It's also the default view renderer in JSF 2.x. The only catch is
that
you have to use at least JSF 1.2.

I found this link useful in the past setting it up,

using
the sun implementation instead of MyFaces, but the instructions still
seemed
to work.

You can get it to support JSF 1.2 and Facelets, but it requires some
trickery :-) You have to either use a shared library or have the JSF
1.2

terminology, but it's something like that.

I'd honestly not suggest learning JSF 1.1. So much has changed since
then
and it's really a pretty bad version. If you use JSF 1.2 with Facelets
you
get close to JSF 2.0. If you can go to WAS 7, it uses JSF 1.2 by
default.
At
one point I had JSF 2.0 working on it, but it breaks EJB injection.

As far as you're error, that's tough to say without seeing any source.
It
could be lots of different things. I haven't used JSF with JSP's in
many
years though.
