Superfluous? With the caret, this will match:

http://host:port/imageserver/whateverelse

Without the caret that'll _still_ match. Maybe that's why you think it's superfluous?

However, without the caret, this would _also_ match (with the caret, it won't):

http://host:port/foo/bar/imageserver/whateverelse

The caret means "at the start". Without the caret, it doesn't matter where "/imageserver/" appears in the URL... it doesn't have to be at the beginning, because Vern didn't use a caret.

Whether that makes the caret "superfluous" depends on what other URLs the site uses, I guess.


The URL for the above could be

http://ourIPaddress:port/imageserver/vernspgm?name=vern&date=11/22/2009
