We do web applications with both .Net and IBMi. If an establishment requires a software solution and they already have an IBMi then that is the platform that we would go for when developing the solution. From a UI perspective, there is nothing that you can do in a .Net environment that you cannot also do on the IBMi (apart from finding good server side examples for solving certain problems).
Our problem comes when it comes to trying to win business from potential small to medium sized customers who typically have Windows servers all over the place and DO NOT already have an IBMi in the mix. It is very difficult to come up with an attractive proposition (cost-wise) that includes the purchase or lease of an IBMi. In the past we have proposed a choice between an IBMi solution and a .Net solution, and had to bump up the cost of the .Net development just to give the IBMi solution some semblance of parity.
Some sort of Cloud offering may help in the future, but try convincing business owners that it is a good idea to have their software and data held offsite somewhere, especially if their internet connectivity is less than reliable. It is a tough sell!

I run a Zend community edition web server with a mySQL database and Drupal + Mediawiki on my laptop. As long as I'm inside my company firewall and connected to our network, anyone in the company can access the public pages in these sites. And the whole software stack is free.
Obviously, no one would want to run a production system on a laptop. The point is you can do a Dual 2.26 GHz Intel Core2 Duo with 2GB memory when it comes to these packages. One certainly could run some of these packages (especially inside the enterprise) on machines priced well below the cost of a typical IBM i.

I know I'm pulling a quote out of context from a message that is otherwise
supportive of running Wordpress under IBM i, which I'm in favor of too, so I
hope you'll forgive me, but I want to point out that Power servers in and of
themselves cost about the same as comparably equipped Intel servers. In other
words, the "iron" costs about the same.
And when comparing IBM i to Microsoft SQL server, the DBMS costs are comparable
too. But does one need a server+DBMS for Wordpress?
