Aaron

let me remind you of, that Ext JS in it self are GPLv3 licensed and if
you uses any UX, they have seperate licenses - and they may be LGPL
licensed, but you will still be prohibited in commercial use.

So RPGUI also uses GNU GLPv3 components - and will NOT in a commercial
perspective be free !!!

There are conditions in the GPLv3, which PowerEXT is released under, that
are not business friendly.

Agreed, and that is exactly why RPGUI (http://mowyourlawn.com/rpgui.html)
uses an LGPL which gives more liberty, though not as much as MIT. It's
not
that I dislike somebody trying to make a profit off their open source (I
actually think that is a good idea because then that project stands a
chance
of surviving), but it is more the ambiguity of GPLv3 and it's
implementation
by the likes of ExtJS where you can't seemingly get a straight answer out
of
them concerning what would constitute infringement.

On the note of open source dual-license RPG, one company that has done it
much better than others is CNXCorp with their Valence product. They have
a
community edition that is free and then a paid for edition which costs per
developer. They do a good job of exhausting all the possible questions
you
could have concerning their licensing at the following URL:
http://cnxcorp.com/valence/faqs/#how-changed. After reading all of those
questions/answers I have a much better idea of exactly how they operate
and
WHY they approached it they way they did.

Yeah I realized my mistake as soon as I saw my message come through...
:P

What is the license cost of PowerEXT? Or did you open source your
developed
application to get around licensing?

I am only using PowerEXT Core which is MIT licensed. I've been avoiding
PowerEXT due to the GPLv3 license. I just wanted some of the procedures
he
has in PowerEXT Core. Thanks for bringing this up to highlight the
difference. I am recommending PowerEXT Core ONLY. There are conditions
in
the GPLv3, which PowerEXT is released under, that are not business
friendly. The MIT license; however, does not have the same
restrictions.

I have actually been working on my own library that is very specific to
our
company and PowerEXT Core made it a little easier.

Hans hasn't chimed in yet so I'll do it for him. :)

There's also http://powerext.com/ that is based on CGIDEV2 but he
has
added
a several useful procedures. I am currently using PowerEXT core for
a
project and have been pretty impressed.
