I concur on developing different approaches to modernization.

Although I personally prefer PHP, I think IBM i applications can be modernized with several technologies (PHP, Java, .NET, EGL, CGIDEV and any number of third-party solutions). Which technology is "best" for a shop often depends less on features of the technologies and more on business needs, developer skills, time constraints and budget constraints.

Of course, the price we pay for a wide range of choices is bewilderment in the face of those very same choices. So many choices can even cause a "deer in the headlights" effect. You know you need to get moving, but you can't decide on a direction, so you just stand there. Getting managers to pick a technology and go with it is one of the biggest obstacles my shop faces in IBM i modernization.

Subject: Re: [WEB400] RPG CGI for PHP programmers

Aaron,

I think it's a great idea. Using a different approach, such as what you
are advocating, would be another option to help us who are web challenged
move forward. More options for learning offer more opportunities for
success.

FWIW - My two cents is that last year we spent a good month working with
the Valence trial. Richard and his team gave us great support and I really
liked it's potential, but EXTJS and web 2.0 was difficult and
unfortunately a hurdle that my programmers (and I) couldn't get our
heads around. As a result we opted for RPGsp to help us move forward. Back
then we knew little regarding HTML, Javascript and CSS and even less
about EXTJS and web 2.0.

Thanks!

Regards, Jerry
