Not directly a response to the QQ issue, but when we've had to know when
the user closed the browser we've gone for monitoring for the lack of a
response. As you stated, you can't rely on the onClose event, as that
may not always fire. Instead we've added an ajax callback on the page
that "pings" the server every 30 seconds. If we don't receive that ping
then we know the user has gone away. We do allow for a missed ping or
two, but if you're pinging every x seconds then you can safely assume
that after 4x seconds they're not coming back.
