The other day I missed a talk by Erik Meijer about using JavaScript as a compiler backend (which is a fascinating idea) but saw Dan Ingalls talk about the lively kernel, which is a complete environment in Javascript in a web browser. I concur with your statement that Javascript is a good thing to learn - I might even do it myself :)
