Pete,

I'm the same way. Unfortunately instructor led training is not an option at the moment. I like to use our community colleges for this type of thing when I can and for the same reasons you mentioned. After two years of trying to teach myself C and C++ I realized I needed the resources available from a classroom setting and the homework assignments to give me something to work on.

All good replies so far and good counsel.

The OO stuff was the biggest hurdle for me. I had done some VB, C and some C++ programming so I had a fairly good handle on what I thought an object was but it wasn't quite enough.

I struggled with "do it yourself" coding for about 4 months and then I took a beginning level Java class and I LOVED it. Worth every penny. I am a hands on learner so being in class where I could ask questions, break stuff and get help fixing and understanding the "fix" was invaluable. I DO recommend starting first with some self study (the Java for RPG programmers book was helpful to me) but then, get in an instructor led class (like those from Learningtree) and get some assisted learning help.
