Yes, I understand that, but I was still caught off guard by a product where the entire database was accessed and controlled by a custom-built programming interface. I wasn't expecting that. I'd previously read test cases that prototyped and theorized about implementing all database I/O through Web services, but never expected anyone to actually do it.
That's one of my problems with EIM. Person's names and directory related data is used so widely, across so many applications, that I have a hard time not having access through SQL, and in my case, native IBM i record level access methods.
Nevertheless, the fact that Sharepoint exposes its entire database, only through a custom API, is a testament to the degree that Web services are taking hold.
