Yes, sort of. There are third party solutions out there as well as one
from Zend (chargeable). PHP can be obfuscated. Not truly compiled, but
the source can be obfuscated for proprietary distribution of PHP
applications. Also for optimization where you have high volume
transactions against a series of scripts. We can get together off-list
if you are interested in the full sales pitch :-)
*** Opinion piece *** Most folks in PHP-land are utopian Open Source
share-and-share-alikes, or they just don't share their code. So the
need for privacy is not that huge. I think this is a good thing and I
challenge that for every 10 things you take from the open source arena,
you should give back at least one. This can be in the form of code,
examples, documentation and most especially, cash. There are wonderful
sites where you can donate code like phpclasses.org and hotscripts.com.
And many open source projects looking for a simple $5 donation. I
showed my support when Firefox first came out by buying an over-priced
polo-shirt with the logo on it. Same for SystemiDeveloper :-)
In most languages, is there truly and advantage to compiled code? Other
than that there might be a slight performance benefit for some. The PHP
Parser has been tuned pretty well without the need for compilation. I
keep hearing this argument brought up by folks who claim PHP is not
ENTERPRISE. That and the loosely typed variable structure. These
issues seem confusing as I am curious why we NEED strongly typed and
compiled languages to be ENTERPRISE?
