Found it about 2 minutes ago. The person I have working on this project found this one. On a quick look it appears that the spell checking part is php based. The rest is all JavaScript and is multi-browser which looks exactly like what we want. I don't have a problem running php server side to support this, just don't want to go to the work and then not have it work with websphere java apps.
You may want to have a go at Quercus which is a PHP-engine written in Java. Then you can probably keep it all in WebSphere without having to install a seperate webserver with PHP.
