object literals are part of the JavaScript language which is an ECMA
standard.

JSON itself may be a "standard", but there is no standard way of
validating the JSON, similar to DTDs or schema in XML.

This is actually a relevant point.

Having a good XML Schema allows you to catch a lot of data errors (bad date formats etc) before leaving your own system, or before being accepted by you.

We have used it for both in several projects - it saves a lot of finger pointing.
