I ran into this while doing XSLT processing (nothing to do with AJAX but doing a similar concept in trying to consume a resource on another server).
Yup, this is correct. In fact, you can't even specify the URI portion of
the URL. You can theoretically get around this by using a proxy server,
although I haven't tried it.
Note that in my open source framework (AIRPort) I use HTML as my transport
protocol. Each span in my overall page (the "terminal") has a number of
panes ("gates" - yeah, I know, the terminology is cutesy, but it's easy to
remember) and each gate is loaded from a different JSP page. What's nice
about this technique is that I can debug the individual JSP pages outside of
the Ajax framework and then just plug them in.
