Both fields are defined as 20A and the data that was entered was only 5
characters in length

Are you sure you didn't mean to use MOVEL instead of MOVE?  Or, better 
yet, EVAL?  I suspect that LASTNAME contains data, but is longer than 
LNAME, so data is being dropped.
