One other thing that's important for performance with Tomcat 4.x is to download the updated connector from the Apache.org site. The IBM delivered connector does work okay with 4.x but the newer connector performs better. Other reasons for moving off of the IBM supplied version is that they removed functionality and that there are a bunch of security/stability issues with the version they delivered.
