Extact information between carriage returns

I'm not very familiar with all of the CGI terminology and procedures so
this might sound like a stupid question.
I'm trying to extract information typed into a textarea into an array.
Right now I'm doing the following: 
D#CR              C                   x'25'
details = zhbgetvar('det');
x = %scan(#CR:details);

I'm going to stick the %scan inside of a loop and parse out the text
that is in between carriage returns and add that information to an
array. 
Is there a better way to do what I'm about to attempt?
