But in my (perhaps jaded and cynical) > opinion, it's only delaying the inevitable. The flip side is that so many software rewrite efforts have failed! I'm working with folks who are taking an incremental approach. While retaining the iSeries database, queries, reports, statements, and many batch procedures, many of the 5250 programs will be replaced incrementally. A menu system consisting of more than a thousand menu items will be converted to a tree structured HTML interface that may activate and bring forward either a character mode 5250 panel, a HTML panel, or possibly some other UI option, depending on the circumstance. The browser offers an environment for integrating multiple types of user interfaces, while enabling swapping between them. The idea is to integrate old and new, while incrementally replacing parts that would be better served by graphical point and click scrollable pages. Nathan M. Andelin www.relational-data.com
