They're all pretty similar in how they work... Effectively, the way I see it, there's a big-old CGI program that pre-processes ASPs, JSPs, Net.Data, and PHPs. It interprets the scripting languages embedded with some HTML takes around it and then sends the result to the browser. I'm sure there's some performance issues, feature differences, etc. but the mechanics all seem to be similar.
